NFL Week 9 Game Preview: Bears at Bills

February 22, 2019 by Brian Leave a Comment

Two teams headed in opposite directions meet in upstate New York this week. Chicago comes off a routine victory against the Jets that gave them the top position in the super-tight NFC North.

Their offense is progressing with Coach Matt Nagy exposing quarterback Mitchell Trubisky to more of his playbook each week. The defense is solid, making them a legitimate threat to upend Green Bay or Minnesota in the division.

Buffalo’s defense gave New England all they could handle for about three quarters on Sunday night before Tom Brady and company broke through for a pair of late touchdowns.

If the Bills had an offense, they would have put a scare into the Patriots. But Derek Anderson and LeSean McCoy were held to a pair of field goals. Anderson suffered a concussion in the game and will turn over passing duties to Nathan Peterman in Week 9.

Peterman gets his fourth career start, but the results of his previous opportunities have been horrific. Buffalo’s defense had the Bills in position to beat the Texans in Week 6, only to see Peterman throw a pick-six and a second interception in the final minutes. They were the 9th and 10th interceptions in 84 pass attempts for Peterman.

Bears vs Bills Preview

That led the team to start Anderson, signed just that week to serve as a mentor to Josh Allen, who promptly suffered an injury to the ulnar collateral ligament of his throwing elbow and could miss the rest of the season.

Injuries and notes

Anderson might clear concussion protocol, but the team has already named Peterman the starter for Sunday. They also signed Matt Barkley to serve as a backup if needed.

Linebacker Tremaine Edmonds also suffered a concussion Monday night and is in the protocol.

DE Trent Murphy is questionable.

The team signed wide receiver Terrelle Pryor this week, too.

For Chicago, Khalil Mack is listed as questionable, but there is little doubt he will play.

Wide receiver Adrian Robinson is also banged up and listed as questionable.

Coaching matchup

Bills coach Sean McDermott got lots of credit for the Bills’ surprise playoff appearance last season. So far, it is buying him extra grace while the current Bills looks eerily similar to directionless regimes of past administrations.

Passing up on a chance to get a return for veterans LeSean McCoy and Charles Clay, or even Kelvin Benjamin at the trade deadline for a team obviously in rebuild mode raised eyebrows.

Matt Nagy is in the position McDermott was last season. He inherited much more talent than his Buffalo counterpart, but he was not expected to be in a division race against Green Bay, Carolina, and Detroit.

It’s hard to see Chicago taking a step back next season as the Bills have done in McDermott’s second year.

Who will win the Bills-Bears game?

Buffalo’s defense has surprised a bunch of teams this season, including a near-shutout of the powerful Vikings. Coming off a short week after a great effort like they had against the Patriots, though, is too much to ask.

Chicago takes care of business up north.

NFL Week 10 Game Preview: Bills at Jets

February 22, 2019 by Brian Leave a Comment

Buffalo’s surprise playoff appearance of 2017 and the fans exhilaration at their accelerated rebuild are a distant memory, as is the Jets’ fans satisfaction at stealing five wins with another rebuilding unit.

The prize for the Bills’ effort last season has been the NFL’s most difficult schedule through nine weeks. That would have made for rough sailing even if the team proved justified in jettisoning Tyrod Taylor for AJ McCarron and their offensive line didn’t disintegrate before their eyes.

Bills vs Jets Preview

Throw in a battered and slowed LeSean McCoy and the worst-rated wide receivers group in the league and you have to wonder if Sean McDermott warrants Coach of the Year consideration for guiding this team to two wins.

New York’s disappointing effort against the Dolphins last week made their coach, Todd Bowles, call this matchup a “huge game” for his team. One can blame awful field conditions in Miami for some of the team’s terrible offensive numbers, but it was Elijah McGuire, in his return from injured reserve, that provided the only positive on the day.

Injuries and notes

Sam Darnold sprained a foot on the muddy turf in Miami last week. He is officially listed as questionable for Week 10, but local reporters say he is unlikely to play. Veteran Josh McCown will get the start in Darnold’s place.

Center Spencer Long will play with a finger injury suffered last week. Defensive end Tarell Basham (knee) is the only other player expected to miss the contest.

Josh Allen threw 100 passes in practice Monday and the best news for Buffalo fans Tuesday was that his arm did not fall off. McDermott will not rule Allen out to play against the Jets.

Derek Anderson still has not cleared the concussion protocol, but if he does, he will be the Bills’ second option. Nathan Peterman will play if the other two can’t.

Buffalo released cornerback Phillip Gaines after he accrued 90 yards worth of pass interference penalties against the Bears in Week 9. Ryan Lewis will get the start.

Running back Chris Ivory and tight end Charles Clay are leaning toward doubtful with shoulder and hamstring injuries respectively. Ivory was called “day-to-day” while Clay is listed as “week-to-week”.

Coaching matchup

New York’s general manager, Mike Maccagnan, says the Jets will be major players in the free-agent market this year. With over $100 million in anticipated cap space, the team can fill a lot of holes around their young quarterback and defense.

Maccagnan and Jets’ ownership appreciate the job Todd Bowles has done with lousy rosters and are likely to let him manage next year’s radically changed team. But a win against the battered Bills would help toss any second thoughts emanating from the Dolphins’ game out of their minds.

Likewise, McDermott is in little danger of losing his job in Buffalo. But he and GM Brandon Beane better find some talent for their roster in 2019 if they expect to be as secure next season.

How to watch the Jets-Bills game

CBS Sports will broadcast this game to the greater New York City and Upstate markets. If you are one of the millions of NFL fans who discovered the joys of internet television, you might watch this contest on Sling TV.

Sling TV will send the original CBS feed to your favorite internet-connected device. They will even do it for free if you take advantage of their special introductory trial.

Sling TV, like DirecTV Now and Fubo TV, offers top-quality entertainment channels along with all your live stream NFL action without any special equipment or contracts to sign.

Both defenses will battle to keep two wounded offenses under control. The presence of veteran Josh McCown under center for the Jets could provide the difference in the game.

NFL Week 15 Game Preview: Lions at Bills

February 19, 2019 by Brian Leave a Comment

Detroit will try for its third road win of the season this week in the cold confines of New Era Stadium in Orchard Park, New York. Their 17-3 victory in Arizona was nice, but the Arizona climate is closer to Detroit’s dome than the Bills’ outdoor venue near the Canadian border.

That’s what the Bills will count on as they try to win another one for the home crowd. Buffalo uses strong defense to stay in most games, but it is their wildly inconsistent offense that decides who wins or loses.

Sean McDermott’s decision to release his veteran receivers and leave the passing game in the hands of his rookie quarterback and a slew of young and inexperienced wide-outs signaled surrender to some. McDermott pointed out that any of his receivers who thought as much probably won’t be playing for the Bills in 2019.

Lions vs Bills Preview

Injuries helped doom this team to a rebuilding mode as they entered the season with an offensive line put together midway through training camp, a gimpy running back, and an unimpressive array of receiving options. Throw in a miscalculation at quarterback that forced them to put a rookie development project at the helm, and you wonder how they won four games.

Detroit’s top receiver is second-year player Kenny Golladay after a midseason trade of Golden Tate was followed by a season-ending injury to Marvin Jones Jr. Their best runner, Kerryon Johnson, might miss another week due to injury, too.

Injuries and notes

Injuries to wide receivers Bruce Ellington (hamstring) and Brandon Powell (toe), along with Kerryon Johnson’s uncertain status, could further limit Matt Stafford’s options this week.

Devon Kennard (hip), Da’Shawn Hand (knee), and Trevor Bates (ankle) are among six defensive players on the Detroit injury report.

The Bills could be without both LeSean McCoy (hamstring) and Chris Ivory (shoulder), leaving their running game to rookies.

Coaching matchup

Sean McDermott isn’t feeling pressure from ownership regarding his job status. The team surprised with a playoff appearance last year, but they are in the middle of a rebuild complicated by injuries. The quarterback fiasco might create some fodder if things don’t go better next season. For now, everyone is in an understanding mood in Buffalo.

Matt Patricia is taking the heat in Detroit for not improving on the team’s perpetual 7-9 win purgatory. But ownership realizes the Lions are in rebuilding, or at least, re-shaping mode. Those who are paying attention see there is a plan coming together. It is way too early to tell if Patricia will join the list of Bill Belichick assistants who flopped as head coaches.

How to watch the Bills-Lions game

Fox Sports will provide this game to its affiliates around the Great Lakes regions of Michigan and New York. That means a lot of cold NFL fans can keep warm by watching their favorite team on DirecTV Now.

DirecTV Now is a leader in internet television, providing an economical alternative to overpriced cable and satellite providers. They offer all the local and national networks you need to follow the NFL, and dozens of other movie and entertainment channels to watch between games.

DirecTV Now, like Fubo TV, Sling, and all the internet TV companies, don’t make you buy special equipment or sign contracts to enjoy your favorite shows.

And did we mention how economical DirecTV Now, Fubo TV, Sling, and the others are? You will pay a fraction of what you pay now for cable and satellite if you switch to internet TV.

That’s not an introductory offer or a gimmick to snag you before the price goes up, either. You can cancel any time without penalty, so there’s no sense in playing games.

Check out their websites today to see what DirecTV Now, Sling and Fubo TV offers in your neighborhood.

Who will win the Bills-Lions game?

Matthew Stafford is not the same quarterback away from the dome, especially in the cold. Buffalo’s defense can force errors and keep the Bills in another ugly game. That’s the kind they often win.

NFL Week 16 Game Preview: Bills at Patriots

February 18, 2019 by Brian Leave a Comment

New England lost their second game in a row, dropping their road record to 3-5 with a low-scoring defeat in Pittsburgh.

The week before, they lost a barn-burner that ended when a desperation trick play actually worked as the clock ran out on them in Miami.

Now they face an unpredictable team with above-average defense and an offense in the hands of young and brash skill players. The kind who can ride emotion into an improbable win.

The Patriots and the Bills have played some memorable games over the years, but the Patriots have their number recently. Bill Belichick and Tom Brady know the best way to handle the Bills is to score early and take the wind out of their defense’s sails.

Bills vs Patriots Preview

Belichick and Brady are also painfully aware that if the season were to end today, the Patriots would have to play a wild-card game. Their two losses allowed Houston to sneak past them into the second seed.

While they can’t control how Houston does over the final two weeks, they know they can’t afford to rest against the Bills and Jets if they are to have any chance of recapturing the first-round bye. That doesn’t bode well for their opponents.

Buffalo will try to keep it close with defense and hope their rookie quarterback can run or pass enough to steal another win. They might do it with an undrafted rookie, Keith Ford, handling the rushing duties.

Injuries and notes:

LeSean McCoy (hamstring) and Chris Ivory (shoulder) are both questionable and leaning toward doubtful for this matchup. Third-string running back, Marcus Murphy, is done for the year after suffering an elbow injury in last week’s game.

Tight end Logan Thomas is also questionable with a hamstring injury.

New England lists nobody on their early-week injury report.

Coaching matchup

Bill Belichick continues his legendary run in New England and certainly isn’t in any danger of losing his job with a poor finish or early playoffs exit. It is interesting to note, however, that none of Belichick’s record-setting number of Super Bowl appearances came in a year the Patriots had to play a wild-card game.

Sean McDermott squeezed a few more wins out of this Bills team than expected, especially once it became apparent that LeSean McCoy’s season was going to fall short of his standards. Injuries played a role, but there were enough questionable decisions to put a little pressure on McDermott next year.

How to watch the Patriots-Bills game

CBS will broadcast this game to most of New England and Western New York. If you are a fan there, then you can watch this game for free on Fubo TV.

Fubo TV is one of the leading internet TV providers, with dozens of sports, movies, and entertainment channels included in its standard subscription package.

Fubo, like Sling TV and DirecTV Now, includes all the local network affiliates you need to follow your favorite team, along with the national networks and movie channels you want. You can watch on your home TV, or on any internet-connected device wherever you are.

Best of all, Fubo TV, Sling, and DirecTV Now cost only a fraction of what cable and satellite TV providers charge, and they’ll never ask you to sign a contract or put expensive and unsightly equipment on your home.

Check out the Fubo TV, Sling TV, and DirecTV Now websites to see what they offer in your neighborhood.

Who will win the Patriots-Bills game?

New England has now lost two games in a row for the second time this season. They have only lost three in a row once since Brady became the quarterback. No one should expect to see that happen this year.
